Man dies in head-on collision in Somerton

A man was killed and a woman was transporte­d to a hospital after a head-on collision in Somerton.

On Sunday at approximat­ely 6:41 a.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two-vehicle collision just east of the intersecti­on of Avenue G and County 19th Street.

The investigat­ion revealed that a red, 2016 Dodge Dart sedan was traveling westbound on County 19th Street and a white, 1991 Nissan truck was traveling eastbound.

The driver of the sedan passed another vehicle but failed to rerenter the westbound lanes before colliding with the truck in a head-on collision, according to a YCSO news release.

The YCSO’s Critical Accident Response Team responded to the scene.

The driver of the Nissan truck, Jesus Banuelos-Cruz, 69, of San Luis, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. His next of kin has been notified, YCSO said.

The driver of the Dodge Dart, Marianne Chairez, 21, of Gadsden was transporte­d to Yuma Regional Medical Center by the San Luis Fire Department for non-life threatenin­g injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigat­ion.
