Overnight closures of I-8 to begin Sunday
Other lane restrictions coming Thursday
Motorists should expect overnight lane and ramp closures on Interstate 8 in Yuma beginning Sunday while an overhead utility line is installed.
Drivers will need to allow extra time and use detours while restrictions are in place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly beginning the night of Sunday and continuing through the morning of Thursday, April 19.
The following restrictions are scheduled:
• East and westbound I-8 will be closed between 16th Street (Highway 95) and Avenue 3E.
• Drivers traveling east on I-8 must exit the freeway
at the 16th Street (Highway 95) off-ramp to access local streets or follow the detour to continue traveling east.
• Drivers traveling west on I-8 must exit the freeway on the Avenue 3E off-ramp to access local streets or follow the detour to continue traveling west.
All lane and ramp closures
will be lifted during daytime hours.
Crews from Arizona Public Service are scheduled to install an overhead power line during the overnight hours. Drivers should slow down, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around utility personnel and equipment.
In addition, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced the following
restriction on I-8 for this coming week:
• Westbound I-8 near Harold C. Giss Parkway (milepost 0.42) will be reduced to one lane from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Contractors are scheduled to drill and pour concrete for a closed-circuit camera and transformer foundation. Delays are likely, so travelers should allow extra travel time.
ADOT encourages drivers
to slow down, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel and equipment.
“We’re adding an electronic message board and a closed-circuit camera on I-8 at Giss. It will be the second message board and the first camera in the Yuma area,” ADOT spokesman Tom Herrmann said.
“Once it’s operating
Yuma drivers will be able to see traffic on I-8 through AZ511.gov. I don’t know yet when the camera will be active.”
Herrmann also gave a heads up on utility work, which has already started at Araby Road, that will cause a few lane closures over the next month, with the full construction set starting May 14 and running until Nov. 1.
