Firefighters put out car blaze
Firefighters from the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to Avenue G and County 17 Street Monday night for a vehicle fire.
According to information provided by Capt. Javier Hernandez, the call came in at approximately 8:39 p.m. and when firefighters arrived on scene they found a Toyota Camry fully involved in flames.
The only occupant of the vehicle was a 55-year-old male, who later told firefighters that he was traveling North on Avenue G when he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment.
After pulling off to the side of the road the man stated that he tried to extinguish the fire with dirt, but for his safety later walked away to a safe distance and waited for firefighters to arrive. SCFD firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, but the vehicle was a total loss because the engine and passenger compartments were destroyed.
The Somerton Police Department assisted with traffic control.
