Online security camp fills up

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The topic of online computer security is a hot one among area high school students.

So hot, that a five-day cybersecurity camp, hosted by the Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma (STEDY), filled up in a matter of days, STEDY officials said.

High school students who still want to explore the topic can register for admission to the program through the STEDY offices. Students attending the cyber criminology program during the school year will earn college credit through Arizona Western College.

While the camp is more of an overview, during the semester students will explore topics with more depth. Topics include: human intelligence; Linux exposure; wireless hacking and defense; intro to networking; Windows hacking and defense; building your own home computer lab; and “Becoming a Real Hacker.”

Students will be taught cutting-edge techniques that could be utilized for personal use or lead to opportunities that students may use to defend America from cyberattacks. This program will enable students to begin employment in the related field once a certification has been earned.

The job market for information security analysts, under which cyber security falls, is projected to grow 28 percent from 2016 to 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook.
