The annual Yuma County Open Golf Tournament is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-3. Play will take place at Mesa Del Sol on Saturday, Las Barrancas on Sunday and Desert Hills on Monday. Juniors, men and women are invited to participat­e. The formats include a two-person best ball play on Saturday and Sunday and a concurrent Individual Stroke Play competitio­n all three days. Entry forms are available in the pro shops at all three golf courses.

In the Gila Ridge High School Golf Team Shamble played at the Mesa Del Sol Golf course last Saturday morning, the team of Denney McKay, Mark Myers, David Ramirez and Travis Bogart won low gross. The team of Alan Kravitz, Steve Schulte, Nick Demyan and Jake Montchal won low net. The proceeds go towards equipment, uniforms and travel for the golf team. Thanks to the major supporters Amigo Farms, Barkley Ag, Barkley Seed, Bruce Clark, Chicago Title, Colorado River Granite, Crazy Earl’s, D&H Electric, Desert Premium Farms, Rio Graphics, Speed Golf Enthusiast­s, Yuma Foot & Ankle, Ramirez and the Three Escobars.

Mary Kruse carried her partner Roger Brown to a first-place finish in the gross division of the Scotch Doubles play at Mesa Del Sol on Aug. 17. First place in the net division went to the team of Ray Butler and Garry Sletten with Shannon Mason and Jim Mitchell taking second net. George Christophe­r and Jack Parker finished third the net division.

On Tuesday at the Las Barrancas Golf Course, the Silver League gross score winners were Jack Joseph and John Cullen. The net score winners were Dennis Wagner and Michael Costello. The team winners were Larry Nicholson, Al Smith, Frankie Allen and Lyle Wheeler.

On Aug. 14, John Coffey teamed with Gary Boag, Carol Debolld and Rick Parks for a scrambling even-par 36 to win the weekly Moose Lodge play at Mesa Del Sol. This past Tuesday morning, John Coffey, Howard Beam, Janice Pacheo and Joxey Klinger were the winners with a 3-under 33. Second place went to the team of Frank Domantny, Al Kalbus, Bob Peterson and Bud Hammond with an even-par 36. The gross and net skin winners in the weekly mixed “Pinky’s Pick” play at Mesa Del Sol on Wednesday morning were Jack Parker, Garry Sletten, George Christophe­r, Pam Herring, Raymond Butler and Hank Browning.

On Wednesday at the Foothills Executive Golf Course, the men’s league gross score winners were Michael Costello, Bill Taylor and Greg Beatie. The net score winners were John Newberry, Rick Wilcox and Bob Selle. The team winners were Conrad Eisenach, Buddy Hartly, Jack Costello and Ken Kingston.

In the Mesa Del Sol Thursday Twilight League play, the two-man teams of Tom Norkiewicz and Robert Clayton, and Lynn Harvick and Reggie Feller tied for first place in the two-person shamble play. Three teams tied at 32 in an extremely close competitio­n. Events are open to men and women. Next week’s format is two-person net shamble on the back nine holes. Cost is $30 per player and includes bar snacks after play with play beginning at 5 p.m.

Raymond Butler carded 29 pro power points to win first place in the gross division of the Mesa Del Sol MGA pro points play on Friday morning. Hank Browning posted 41 pro points to win the net division. Marilyn Cotter finished second in the net division followed by Jack Parker in third. The skin winners were Hank Browning, Raymond Butler, George Christophe­r, Al Johnson and Jim Mitchell.

On Thursday morning at Las Barrancas, the Copper League gross score winners were Tony Solina, John Cullen and Mark Hammons. The net score winners were Rollie Harris, Al Pittman and Mark Parks.

The first Annual Ground Combat Directorat­e Golf Tournament will be held at the Mesa Del Sol Golf Course on Sept. 8. The format is a four-person scramble, the entry fee is $45 per person and play begins with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. This event is open to the public and the entry forms are available at the Mesa Del Sol Golf Shop or at the Ground Combat Directors Office.
