Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun
• Thumbs up to those who voted in the primary elections Tuesday. Your participation in this democratic process is much appreciated!
• Thumbs up to the Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma, which awarded $81,460 to local students for the 2018-19 school year. This support will go far in helping students achieve their education dreams!
• Thumbs up to the report from the Yuma Union High School District on San Luis High graduates. SLHS had 560 graduates for the 2017-18 school year, and 395 of those grads plan on attending a college, university or vocational school. That’s terrific news!
• Thumbs up to the library at Arizona Western College, which recently received a grant for $400,000. The funds will be used to expand services at the facility.
• Thumbs up to Piana Group, which recently announced plans to open a fiber-producing plant in San Luis, Ariz. The move will bring close to 30 jobs to the area, as well as an investment of nearly $4 million to the local economy.
• Thumbs down to a recent study with grim news on gun deaths. According to the Associated Press, gun deaths worldwide total about 250,000 yearly. The United States, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and Venezuela contributed to half of that total, and that is not a list we want to be on.
• Thumbs down to the vandal or vandals who spent Sunday morning heaving rocks through the windows of local businesses, including the Yuma Sun offices. It’s a random act of violence, destruction for the sake of destruction, leaving unnecessary costs and cleanups to the businesses.
• Thumbs down to the threats made by minors recently at Cibola and San Luis High School. But thumbs up to the police officers who found the suspects and arrested them — delivering the message that such actions won’t be tolerated.
