U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Andrade port of entry caught a man on Wednesday who was reportedly attempting to smuggle heroin into the country by hiding it inside an internal body cavity.

At about 4:30 p.m., a CBP K-9 team was screening travelers in the pedestrian facility when the detector dog alerted to the man’s backside. Officers escorted the man into a secure area for further inspection.

The man was later transported to a local hospital for evaluation. It was determined by a medical professional that the results of the X-ray showed an object concealed in the man’s rectal cavity.

The man then removed what appeared to be an orange balloon filled with an unknown substance. CBP officers conducted a field test of the substance, which reportedly tested positive for the properties of heroin.

“Attempting to smuggle narcotics can carry severe consequences not to mention the dangers of smuggling them internally,” said Andrade (acting) Port Director Martin Cuesta. “Before committing such an offense consider all the risks, especially to your life. If a package was to rupture you could accidentally overdose and in some cases that can lead to death.”

CBP officers arrested the man for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt and turned him over to the custody of the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office for prosecution.

The narcotics were seized.
