Driver arrested in Phoenix crash that killed 1, hurt 4
PHOENIX — Authorities say a woman has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and other charges in a Phoenix car crash that killed a man and injured four other people.
Phoenix police say 26-year-old Jacqueline Sayre is facing one count of manslaughter and two counts each of aggravated assault and endangerment.
They say the car Sayre was driving about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday allegedly crossed the center line of a street and collided with a vehicle carrying five people.
Police say 67-year-old Paul Andrade was among the four passengers and died from his injuries at a hospital.
They say two adults and one of two children in the vehicle suffered serious injuries. Police say Sayre was travelling alone in her car at the time of the crash and believed to be driving impaired.
Calif. man arrested in 17-year-old homicide in Ariz.
PHOENIX — Authorities say a California man has been arrested for the 17-year-old murder of an El Mirage man.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials announced the arrest Thursday of Frank Gallas Mendoza of Fresno.
Investigators say police went to check on Richard Cacero Lucero at his home in December 2001 and found him dead. His death was ruled a homicide.
DPS director Col. Frank Milstead says advances in DNA testing and other technology in the state crime lab allowed investigators to revisit the case.
Latent fingerprints from the scene of Lucero’s killing were entered into an FBI database.
Mendoza’s name came up as a match. Authorities say local police arrested Mendoza at his Fresno home without incident. He will be transported to Arizona to face murder charges.
Arrest of murderer ends 3-day manhunt
PHOENIX — A three-day manhunt has ended with the arrest of a convicted murderer who cut off his electronic monitoring device and fled from homearrest parole supervision in Mesa.
The U.S. Marshals Service and the Arizona Department of Corrections said Naomis Winfrey was arrested Wednesday night during a traffic stop in Phoenix. The Marshals Service said the arrest occurred after deputy marshals tracked Winfrey to an apartment and saw him getting into a vehicle driven by a woman.
Winfrey fled his Mesa house Monday. He was convicted in 1993 and sentenced to 25 years to life for firstdegree murder and seconddegree burglary and theft out of Pima County.
Winfrey was paroled by the state Board of Executive Clemency to home arrest, which began July 30.
