YCSO seeks public’s help tracking down driver in hit-and-run

- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding the driver of a pickup truck involved in a fatal hit-and-run late last month in which a 54-year-old Yuma woman was killed.

Public information officer Alfonso Zavala said YCSO investigators are looking for what may be a 1-ton dually pickup truck, that is dark in color — possibly red over grey — with overhead cab lights and running lights on the rear fenders.

“The vehicle may have sustained damage to the front passenger headlamp assembly and/or quarter panel,” Zavala said. “The community has always been able to help us in situations such as this and we are turning to it for assistance once again.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, at approximately 7:30 p.m., deputies received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian hit-and-run collision in the 13200 block of east 44th Street in the Foothills.

Once on scene deputies were able to determine that a pedestrian, identified as Antonia Wood, was walking west on the north edge of 44th Street when she was struck by a white Ford pickup that was also traveling west on 44th Street.

The driver of the pickup then continued west on 44th Street without stopping, according to Zavala.

Wood was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and was later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Zavala said the cause of the incident is still under investigation.

He added that deputies were able to locate the driver and vehicle in a fatal hit-and-run that happened a week before this one with assistance from the public.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact YCSO at 928-7834427, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous. Residents can also visit www.yumacountysheriff.org to submit an anonymous tip.
