AWC men also shut out Glendale

Another game, another win closer to clinching the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference regular-season title.

The Arizona Western women’s soccer team improved to 16-0 on the season with a 4-0 victory at Glendale on Tuesday, the Matadors’ eighth shutout of the year. Karen Melendrez (9th minute) and Christiana Boateng (44th) each scored in the first half, while Isabel Coronado added second-half goals in the 64th and 76th minutes.

Boateng, whose first-half goal came via penalty kick and was her conference­leading 23rd of the season, collected the assist on Coronado’s first goal.

Glendale dropped to 1-122 with the loss.

AWC — which has never won a conference title before — is now two wins away from officially locking up the regular-season crown and the No. 1 seed in the Region I tournament­s.

The Matadors, who are ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA, have four regular-season games remaining.

JUCO MEN’S SOCCER AWC 2, Glendale 0

Yerry Mendez put the Matadors on the board in the 55th minute (Jorge Cayo Zelada assist), while Nemanja Zivanovic added a goal in the 89th minute (Jamison Ingram assist).

Glendale (3-12 overall) was limited to just three shots on goal as AWC posted its seventh shutout of the season.

With four regular-season games remaining, the Matadors (11-4-1) reside in third place in the ACCAC.

PREP BOYS GOLF Hawks 2nd in season finale

The Gila Ridge boys golf team shot a 174 Tuesday at Lake Havasu in a three-way match against the Knights and Cibola.

Lake Havasu won with a team total of 165, while the Raiders came in third at 224.

It was the last match of the regular season for both the Hawks and Raiders.

Gila Ridge’s David Ramirez (4-over 40) was the top local finisher, coming in third overall, while teammate Mason Morris (41) took fourth.

Michael Moreno (46) was the top finisher for Cibola.
