5K walk/ run aims to spread diabetes awareness
Event set for Nov. 3 at Wellton Community Center
Community members are being encouraged to get out and get active for Sunset Community Health Center’s (SCHC) 5th annual “5K Walk/Run for Diabetes” event.
In collaboration with the Town of Wellton, SCHC will hold the event Nov. 3, with registration check-in starting at 8 a.m. and the walk/ run starting at 9 a.m. at the Wellton Community Center located at 10234 Dome St. in Wellton.
The main goal of the event is to promote fitness and health as well as spread awareness of diabetes, SCHC officials say. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when blood glucose or blood sugar is too high. According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2015 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, had diabetes.
“Our event is being sponsored by JVS Farms and JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, which makes it possible to provide each participant registered by October 20th with a free T-shirt, snacks and free health screenings,” officials with the health center say. “This event is one of Sunset’s efforts to encourage lifestyle changes to enhance the family’s well being and improve their quality of life. Sunset prides itself in being able to offer this type of event for the community for the fifth year. We encourage the community to come out and participate by walking or running in awareness of diabetes and knowing the importance of being physically active to prevent or manage diabetes.”
All walkers and strollers are welcomed and encouraged, they added.
