BP seizes $91K in meth, arrests 5
Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents from the Wellton Station arrested a United States citizen and four illegal entrants from Mexico on Wednesday for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine into the country.
According to information provided by agent Jose J. Garibay III of the Yuma Sector Public Affairs Office, at about 5:30 p.m., agents observed four individuals walking out of the desert east of Tacna, along Interstate 8.
A short time later, the same four individuals were seen getting into a gray 2009 Nissan Altima travelling eastbound along the interstate.
Agents working the Interstate 8 immigration checkpoint performed an immigration stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 25-year-old male U.S. citizen from Mesa.
The four passengers in the vehicle were identified as Mexican nationals who were in the country illegally.
When agents searched the vehicle they also found a pair of backpacks containing 30.4 pounds of crystallized methamphetamine. The narcotics have an approximate street value of $91,200.
All five individuals were arrested for the transportation of a controlled substance. The four illegal entrants were also processed for immigration violations.
