YPD: 9 people are arrested during Thanksgiving Day DUI detail
An Impaired Driving Enforcement Detail operated by Yuma police over the Thanksgiving Day holiday resulted in nine total arrests for driving under the influence.
Of those DUI arrests eight were for misdemeanors, three were for extreme driving under the influence and one was for driving under the influence of drugs. In all, 124 traffic stops were made during the detail, including eight that resulted in other unspecified arrests.
The detail ran from Wednesday, Nov. 21 until Saturday, Nov. 24.15 extra officers were working throughout the weekend with the detail, helping to stop and arrest drivers who were impaired by alcohol or drugs.
In addition to getting impaired drivers off the street, Yuma police officers were actively enforcing traffic laws and raising public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
During the detail, officers issued 38 speeding tickets, including one for criminal speeding, and gave out 100 other citations for violations other than speeding. Officers also encountered 22 designated drivers.
The average blood alcohol content recorded during this holiday’s detail was 0.143.
Money to pay for the additional officers was provided by a grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, which focuses on the apprehension of drunk drivers.
