Cibola boys hang on late

The Cibola boys basketball team nearly let a double-digit second-half lead go to waste but rallied for a 57-51 victory over Central (Calif.) at home on Tuesday night.

The Raiders led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter but trailed 5047 with less than two minutes remaining before closing the game on a 10-1 run. All 10 of their points during that stretch came from the free throw line.

Quanah Locklear led Cibola with 16 points, while Chris Fernandez also finished in double figures at 10 points. Jason Sandoval added nine points, while Derrick Barnes and Adrian Hernandez had seven each.

Azrel Gonzalez and Aaron Perez scored the Criminals’ two goals. Gonzalez scored off an assist from Bryan Cervantes, while Perez scored on a penalty kick.

Jennifer Moreno, Cheryl Barnett, Jada Barnett and Eliani Neri provided the goals for the Raiders, while Melanie Yanez picked up the shutout in goal.

Moreno opened the scoring in the 12th minute off an assist from Jada Barnett, Cheryl Barnett made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, Jada Barnett made it 3-0 in the 76th minute off an assist from Neri, and Neri capped the scoring in the 80th minute off an assist from Bianca Navarro.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL YC 69, Lake Havasu 43

Veronica Saco (19 points, 7 assists, 5 steals), Sabrina Borland (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Joy Morris (12 points, 4 assists, 6 steals) led the way for the Shamrocks.

San Pasqual 77, North Valley Christian 15

Mary Amador (15 points), Brianna Arriaga (14) and Keija Koteen (9) were the leading scorers for the Warriors.
