Wednesday’s sentencing for a man charged in connection to an armed robbery was postponed.

During what was to be Adrian Guzman’s sentencing, Superior Court Judge David Haws informed attorney Michael Donovan that it was the court’s intention to impose a 7 1/2 year prison sentence on his client, with credit for the 169 days that he has already served while in custody.

Upon hearing the court’s intentions, Donovan requested a mitigation hearing. Guzman, who remains in Yuma County jail on a $20,000 bond, pleaded guilty to one felony count of aggravated robbery in a plea agreement from prosecutors during a previous hearing in November.

In return for his guilty plea, charges of armed robbery, possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor, and unlawful flight from pursuing law enforcement against Guzman were dismissed. Four counts of aggravated assault were also dropped.

Haws scheduled the mitigation hearing for 4 p.m. on Feb. 13, adding that sentencing may follow immediately afterwards, According at about to 8:30 Yuma p.m. police, on May 31, officers were sent to a UPS facility, located at 2851 S. Avenue 2½ E, after a report of a robbery.

Officers learned that two male subjects attempted to steal packages from the facility. During the incident, a handgun was also pointed at employees and the suspects left with several packages. The suspects fled the scene in a dark passenger car. Witnesses were able to obtain the car’s license plate number. About 30 minutes later, officers spotted the vehicle in the area of Araby Road and 24th Street and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop. A pursuit then ensued, resulting in stop sticks being deployed. The vehicle was eventually brought to a stop on the 16th Street exit ramp from Interstate 8, where officers performed a high-risk vehicle stop. Guzman was reportedly the sole occupant of the vehicle and was taken into custody.
