Wrestling: Criminals win three duals at home

The Yuma High wrestling team won three duals at home on Wednesday to improve their overall record on the season to 32-4.

The Criminals beat Estrella Foothills 72-6, Desert Edge 54-21 and Peoria 60-21.

Mikey Doerr (106 pounds), Mario Bugarin (120), Erick Cervantes (160), Jacob Sanchez (195), Jayden Dobson/Carlos Nunez (220) and Shane Garcia/Justin Perez (285) all went undefeated for Yuma High.

Wrestling: Yuma Catholic goes 3-0 at Antelope

The Yuma Catholic wrestling team went 3-0 in duals Wednesday at Antelope.

The Shamrocks beat Odyssey Institute 39-37, San Pasqual 4233 and Antelope 62-18.

Miguel Loya (120 pounds), Aden Cain (132), Jose Macias (138) and Brandon Miller (145) all went undefeated for YC.

Boys hoops: Kings fall to Westwood

The Kofa boys basketball team lost 60-28 to Westwood at home on Wednesday.

Jacob Ramirez had 15 points for the Kings (2-8 AIA), while Joao DeSouza (10 points, 10 rebounds) collected a double-double.

Kofa next plays Friday at San Luis.

Girls hoops: Kofa loses by 43 points in Mesa

The Kofa girls basketball team lost 84-41 to Westwood in Mesa on Wednesday.

Kamariah Hawkins had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Kings (1-9 AIA), while Jyannell Guerrero added 12 points.

The Kings next play Friday at home against San Luis.

Girls hoops: Raiders suffer 1st defeat of regular season

The Cibola girls basketball team (8-1 AIA) is no longer undefeated in AIA play after losing 41-33 at Skyline on Wednesday.

The Arizona Western men’s basketball team had to hold off multiple comeback attempts from Phoenix College Wednesday night at home to escape with an important Arizona Community College Athletic Conference win.

The Matadors (12-4 overall, 6-2 ACCAC) won 95-87 after seeing a 15-point lead shrink to two points in the closing minutes against the Bears (6-10 overall, 1-7 ACCAC). There was another 15-point lead that was cut to four points in the second half, as well.

Each time AWC would push a lead out to 10-plus points, Phoenix would scramble back with their unrelentin­g pressure and keep the game in check.

“I think it had a lot to do with Phoenix and just the way that they play,” AWC coach Charles Harral said. “They press the whole game and that wears you down.”

The Matadors put together one of their better defensive efforts of the season in the first half, but that fell apart later on.

During the first 20 minutes they held the Bears to 35 percent from the field and built a 44-33 lead. AWC was able to go down low and let its big and physical forwards work. Andre Allen led the group with 21 points and eight rebounds, Abderrahma­ne Hailouf had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Pharoh Allah had eight points, but worked as the team’s glue guy on defense.

AWC out-rebounded Phoenix 43-36.

Allen and Hailof were able to find a lot of their easy looks by hustling in transition and beating the defense down the floor.

“I did think three of our inside guys (did well),” Harral said. “If you look at what they did rebounding and defensivel­y with Allen, Allah and Hailof. Those three guys made the hustle plays and got the rebounds.”
