Yuma High wrestling wins Div. III Sec. III title

Cibola takes 2nd at Div. I Sec. II meet

The Yuma High wrestling team produced six individual champs and 13 state qualifiers en route to winning the Division III Section III title Saturday at Youngker High School in Buckeye.

Mario Bugarin (113 pounds), Jacob Navarro (120), Erick Cervantes (152), Aidan Irwin (170), Jacob Sanchez (182) and Jayden Dobson (195) all won individual titles for the Criminals, who totaled 256 points as a team. Desert Edge came in second with 123 points.

Also qualifying for state for Yuma High were: Mikey Doerr (2nd at 106), Shane Garcia (2nd at 285), Carlos Nunez (3rd at 220), Anthony Jimenez (4th at 126), Leo Velazquez (4th at 132), Carlos Velazquez (4th at 138) and Josh Sanchez (4th at 145).

Gila Ridge, also wrestling at the Div. III Sec. III meet, finished tied for fourth with 116 points. The Hawks produced four state qualifiers: Ty Moreno (3rd at 126), Wyatt Robinson (3rd at 195), Ayden Navarro (4th at 113) and Justin Rhoades (4th at 170).

The Arizona Interschol­astic Wrestling State Championsh­ips will be held Thursday-Saturday at Prescott Valley Event Center. The Division III and IV meets begin Thursday and conclude Friday, while the Division I and II meets begin Friday and conclude Saturday.

Yuma High is the defending Division III state champ.
