’Rocks easily take out Chandler Prep

The Yuma Catholic boys soccer team is senior-heavy this year.

The Shamrocks have 14 seniors listed on their roster, and nine of their 11 starters are seniors.

Those seniors — more than half of whom have been with the varsity team for three or four years — played their final game at Ricky Gwynn Stadium on Saturday, and the result was the same as every other time they’ve stepped on their home field.

A Yuma Catholic victory, and an easy one at that.

The No. 1-ranked and four-time defending state champion Shamrocks cruised to an 8-0 win over No. 8 Chandler Prep in the 3A state tournament quarterfin­als to set up a meeting with No. 4 Northwest Christian in the semifinals Tuesday at Williams Field High School in Gilbert.

With the win, YC’s fouryear varsity members improved to 28-0 overall at home in their careers — including 6-0 in the postseason. The last two senior classes could actually say the same, as you have to go back six seasons to find the Shamrocks’ last home defeat.
