First Take

- By Grady Garrett, sports editor

It’s an exciting time for Yuma Catholic soccer. The Shamrocks’ boys and girls teams have both made the 3A state tournament semifinals.

For the casual local soccer fan, though, it’s not such an exciting time — because frankly, the YC teams are too good.

State quarterfinal games should be, for the most part, competitive. But in quarterfinal action on Saturday, YC’s boys beat Chandler Prep 8-0 and YC’s girls beat Sahuarita 7-1. Not exactly a whole lot of drama.

I don’t expect much drama in the semifinals, either, when YC’s boys face Northwest Christian tonight and YC’s girls face Anthem Prep on Wednesday.

Perhaps Friday’s state championship games could be different.

Coronado could prove to be a formidable opponent for YC’s boys, and NWC could challenge YC’s girls.

It’s not YC’s fault they’re too good for the competition. But from an observer’s perspective, it’d be nice to see a close game or two.
