San Luis Library hosts back to school fair Sat.

SAN LUIS, Ariz. — Youngsters can find out Saturday about what the library can offer to help them with their schoolwork.

The library, 1075 N. Sixth Ave., will host a back to school fair for students from San Luis and south Yuma County in grades kindergarten through eighth.

And the first 505 youths to show up for the event (that starts at 9 a.m.) will get a free backpack.

Actívate, a community service group, gathered donations and secured a grant to pay for the backpacks, all of which will be filled with school supplies.

“This event is an effort to help students’ families, said Martina Lopez, a member of Actívate, a group affiliated with the San Luis-based housing organization Comite de Bien Estar. “The back to school expenses are a lot, and the schools have less and less funds for school supplies, and the lists of what families have to buy are longer.”

The back to school fair continues until 1 p.m.

Megan Baird, manager of the San Luis Library, says the fair also allows the library to showcase the programs and resources it can offer students for their school projects and assignments.

Community service organizations around the area also will have representatives at the event to provide information about services they provide.

The Friends of the Yuma County Libraries will also have a limited supply of children’s books that they will hand out.

For more information about the fair, call the library at 928-627-8344 or the Comite de Bien Estar, 928-627-8559.
