Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the anonymous donor who has been sending a $20 donation to Amberly’s Place every month for a year now. The support is appreciated!

• Thumbs up to the staff at the Yuma International Airport and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma for their emergency response when a cross-country flight had to make an emergency landing here. The plane was traveling from San Diego to Charlotte, N.C., but had to stop due to smoke in the cockpit. The issue was caused by a microwave problem, and another plane was sent to pick up the passengers for the rest of the trip to Charlotte.

• Thumbs up to Back the Badge USA, for donating 15 first aid medical kits to the Somerton Police Department! The bags will be placed in Somerton PD patrol vehicles, which currently lack such kits.

• Thumbs up to Target, which is selling adaptive costumes this year for children in wheelchairs, incorporating the chair into the costume. What a great idea that is long overdue!

• Thumbs down to these scam calls claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, saying someone’s account has been frozen or somehow compromised. We’ve heard several reports from people in Yuma County who have gotten this call lately. Don’t fall for it. Instead, hang up and call the agency directly, at 1-800-772-1213.

• Thumbs down to the weather this week. Heat, humidity and wind here … and it’s not just rough in Yuma County. Much of the nation was baking this week. Here’s looking ahead to cooler weather — even though we know it will be a while before Yuma gets a break!

• Thumbs down to whoever made a bomb threat at the U.S. Port of Entry at San Luis, Ariz. No explosives were found, but the port was shut down for about two hours Monday, impacting traffic flow in and out of the U.S.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
