Bakery in Somerton sells cookies to help cancer support group
SOMERTON — The customers of a Somerton bakery can have the added satisfaction of knowing that when they bite into a cookie they are helping cancer patients at Yuma Regional Cancer Center.
Cake Shop LD is selling cookies baked in the shape of a ribbon, the symbol of the fight against cancer, with proceeds going to the Hispanic Support Group, which is affiliated with the cancer center.
Liz Flores, who owns the bakery with her husband, Daniel Garcia, said the support group previously asked the business to submit a bid to provide baked good for an event the group was organizing.
“They asked us for a bid, but then we got other ideas, and we saw it as an opportunity to help other people,” she said.
She said the couple was motivated not only by the group’s mission, but by the experiences of their own family members battling the disease.
“It’s something that’s very emotional for the two of us, because cancer has hit hard in our own families,” Flores said. “My husband’s mother died of cancer when he was 16 years old and my father also died of cancer. If they had had a support like what this group provides, they would have had an easier transition through the disease.”
The Hispanic Support Group meets periodically in Yuma, overseeing activities to help and encourage cancer patients. But those activities require financial support.
The butter cookies are not only baked in the shape of ribbons but come in varying colors of frosting, in keeping with the different colors that symbolize different forms of cancer.
Each cookie sells for $2 or a contribution in another amount, with proceeds going to the Hispanic Support Group.
The cookies are sold at the bakery located at 725 E. Main St. in Somerton and in locations in Yuma and San Luis. For more information about sale sites, call the bakery at 928-315-6779.
