Murder charge now sought after shooting victim dies
A 20-year-old Yuma man now faces a first-degree murder charge after the man he is accused of shooting earlier this month died Sunday.
The victim, who has now been identified as 31-year-old Marcus Jackson, died from his wounds at a Phoenixarea hospital. He had been shot three times, once in the shoulder, once in the chest and once in the head.
Since accused shooter Jimmie Roy Jordan was arraigned on Friday, which was before Jackson died, the amended charge of first-degree murder instead of attempted first-degree murder is being sought through a direct indictment from the Yuma County Grand Jury.
Jordan, however, remains charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of misconduct involving weapons and in custody at the Yuma County jail on a $1 million bail.
According to Yuma police, Jordan was sought as a suspect in an attempted homicide that happened Friday, July 19 in the 2100 block of South 5th Avenue.
Officers responded to the location at 4:43 a.m. in reference to a man down call. Upon their arrival on scene, officers located Jackson with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Phoenix area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said Jackson was eventually declared “brain dead” and placed on life support.
Jordan was located July 23 in the 1800 block South Walnut and was taken into custody without incident.
This is not the first time Jordan had been wanted by law enforcement.
Last year Jordan, who eventually turned himself in, had also been sought by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office for questioning in connection to a triple murder that happened on Sept. 3, 2018 at a home in the 2700 block of West 5th Street.
Though he was never indicted in relation to the murders, he was charged with a number of drug offenses after a search warrant was carried out on his residence.
That case was dropped at the beginning of this year.
