Board to discuss status of downtown county building

- BY BLAKE HERZOG @BLAKEHERZOG

The Yuma County Board of Supervisors on Monday will take a look at the almost-complete construction plans for the buildout of 197 S. Main St. in downtown Yuma and discuss how to shore up the floor under its future auditorium.

The nearly 100-year-old building already houses the assessor’s, recorder’s and treasurer’s offices, as well as Election Services. Now, about 10,000 square feet of still-vacant space will be filled out by the board members’ offices, the communications department, office space, meeting rooms and an auditorium which will at least double the seating capacity over where the board currently meets.

A county staff report says there have been concerns about the weight-bearing capacity of the floor under where the auditorium will be built. The results of an analysis by a structural engineering firm will be presented at the board’s meeting, along with how to address the weaknesses and the costs of doing so.

The first phase of renovations and the building’s purchase price totaled $4.2 million, while the cost of the second phase is expected to come in at around $1.8 million.

The meeting will begin 9 a.m. Monday in the current Board of Supervisors auditorium, across the street at 198 S. Main St. Other agenda items include:

• Approval of a purchase order for $874,578 for audio-video system upgrades for nine Superior Court courtrooms and one Justice Court Precinct 1 courtroom.

Justice AV Solutions (JAVS) of Louisville, Ky., which has been maintaining the courts’ AV equipment for more than 10 years, was identified as a sole-source provider because of how long it would take another company to learn about and create a plan for the courtrooms.

• A zoning reversion case for a property at 2540 W. 5th Street in Yuma, where the board could decide to extend a deadline for developing the property or allow the zoning to revert to its previous Low-Density Residential-8,000 square feet minimum category.

• A proclamation of Sept. 16 as “National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims.”
