Cocopah Tribe breaks ground for new store

Convenience store will be across from casino; Border Boots reopens as Red Wing Shoe Store in Yuma

-

With a ceremony on Sept. 6, the Cocopah Indian Tribe celebrated the groundbreaking of a new convenience store that will be located on Highway 95, across from the Cocopah Casino.

The new store is expected to open in the spring of 2020 and will feature 16 vehicle pumps, seven truck trailer diesel pumps, traffic signal access and bus and trailer parking.

It will also have an information center, coffee shop with drive-thru and a 19-door cooler and walk-in beer cave. The convenience store portion will occupy 9,060 square feet and have an expanded line of products.

Construction is expected to be finished in April 2020. Core Engineering

designed the new store. Denise Construction is the contractor.

Regarding the original Korner Store, the tribe is looking at other potential uses for the site, however, it is still too early in the process to list specifics, spokeswoman Juana M. Gyek said.

All the employees from the original Korner Store will be relocated to the new facility. With this new, larger store, the tribe will likely need to hire additional employees, Gyek added. *** Border Boots closed its doors last month, but a Red Wing Shoe Store opened Sept. 9 in the same location at 1335 S. Pacific Ave., Suite 101A, across from Sam’s Club.

The store now goes by Red Wing, instead of Border Boots, and is owned by Red Wing Corporate.

Dallas Evans, owner of Border Boots, decided to retire and is enjoying his retirement driving cross country.

The store was closed for cleaning and has now opened back up with a whole new line with lots of different styles to choose from.

“And my favorite part about it, we will be carrying Heritage Boots,” said store manager Manuel Cortez.
