National Garden Club Essay Contest – Sponsored locally by Pecan Grove Garden Club, the contest is open to students grades 9 to 12. The essay title is “Challenges in Preserving our Natural Habitats.” Length should be 600 to 700 words. Entries should be typed and titled. $100 cash award for the winning essay, which moves on to the state contest. A cover page should include a walletsize photo, student’s name, grade, address, phone number, school name, list of activities and Pecan Grove Garden Club for the sponsoring club. National Garden Club Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest – Sponsored locally by Pecan Grove Garden Club, the contest is open to grades one through five. Smokey Bear posters must include the slogan, “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires”, and Woodsy Owl posters must include the slogan “Lend a Hand – Care for the Land!” The poster should depict the slogan and use accurate colors for the animal’s uniform. Entries are 11 inches by 17 inches and can be made using any type of art materials. No three-dimensiona­l posters, computer scanned or electronic­ally generated images. On the back of the poster, in the lower right hand corner, print artist’s name, grade, teacher’s name, school name, school address and phone number, and Pecan Grove Garden Club for the sponsoring club.
