Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the construction boom in San Luis, Ariz. Comite de Bienestar says it is seeing a surge in construction activity that it expects will continue into 2020.

• Thumbs up to the Yuma Catholic High School robotics club, which recently earned a trophy for its accomplishments at the FIRST Tech Challenge in Gilbert, Ariz. Congrats to the club! • Thumbs up to the Yuma County students for their efforts on the AzMERIT tests. The tests were taken last spring, with the results coming out recently. It’s not an easy test, and students here work hard to succeed, as do their teachers. We appreciate all that goes into this, for both the students and the teachers!

• Thumbs up to art teacher Jacqueline Lawson and the students at Wellton Elementary School for the mural project that promotes kindness among the school community! The messages are great, and the murals are welcome splashes of color and thoughtfulness!

• Thumbs up to the volunteers who cleaned up a stretch of Yuma roadway in honor of Rural/Metro firefighter David Irr, who died on duty nine years ago.

• Thumbs up to Phil Rodriguez, who was sworn in Wednesday night as Yuma’s new city administrator. And, thumbs up to Jay Simonton, who filled in as interim city administrator since April!

• Thumbs up to Yuman Jonathan Lines, who was honored this week for his lifelong commitment to the Boy Scouts of America! His dedication is appreciated!

• Thumbs down to the news that a $14.6 million Arizona lottery ticket has gone unclaimed. The ticket was sold in Goodyear on June 5, and the winner had until 5 p.m. Monday to have the ticket verified – which didn’t happen.

• Thumbs down to porch pirates who prey on packages left outside. This is the season for lots of deliveries, so Yuma, please – be vigilant, and make sure you get those boxes inside quickly.

• Thumbs down to the rash of accidents in Yuma County lately. Is it the weather, or holiday rushing, or people simply not paying attention? We don’t know, but the cause is irrelevant. Slow down, pay attention, and help each other reach those destinations safely.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
