Raiders, Hawks win 1st-round games in SW Rotary Classic

Of the eight local boys basketball teams participating in the Southwest Rotary Classic, two won their first-round games Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Cibola beat Holtville (Calif.) 80-36, and Gila Ridge beat Antelope 76-23.

The Raiders move on to face Lincoln County (Nev.), while the Hawks will take on Shadow Ridge (Nev.).

In Gila Ridge’s win over Antelope, Jamison Kay (19 points) and Jordan Stevens (16) both scored in double figures for the Hawks.

Stats were unavailable from Cibola’s game.

Stone Braveheart had 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Kings’ first-round loss to 2A Pima, while Jacob

Ramirez and Luis Rodriguez each added nine points. Kofa’s loss, coupled with Yuma Catholic’s loss to Dobson, sets up a rare Kings-Shamrocks matchup today at 10 a.m., which will be the programs’ first meeting in five years.

PREP GIRLS HOOPS Cibola 55, Central (CA) 11

Myna Johnson (15 points, 7 assists, 7 steals) and Quinn Thompson (13 points) led the way for the Raiders in the first round of the Brawley Tournament.

Warriors go 1-1

San Pasqual went 1-1 on the opening day of the Williams Route 66 Holiday Classic, beating Ash Fork 36-28 before falling to Lincoln Prep 39-36.

Mary Amador had 14 points and seven rebounds in the win, and 24 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Emeray Emerson had nine points in the win.

PREP BOYS SOCCER San Luis 1, Gila Ridge 0

Iann Topete scored off an assist from Erick Quirarte as the Sidewinders earned the win in their season opener.

Gila Ridge dropped to 0-2.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER Cibola 4, Cesar Chavez 0

Sydney West (1 goal, 2 assists), Karla Jaramillo (1 goal), Jada Barnett (1 goal) and Itzel Meza (1 goal) did the scoring for the Raiders in their first game of the Desert Ridge Cactus Cup.

Jazmine Medrano and Faith Estrada each had one assist, while Lizbeth Yanez and Cecilia Castanon combined for the shutout in goal.
