2 hospitalized in three-vehicle collision
A three-vehicle collision early Friday morning near Somerton sent two people to Yuma Regional Medical Center, the Somerton/ Cocopah Fire Department reported.
Fire Chief Paul De Anda said the crash happened at approximately 5:43 a.m. at the intersection of Somerton Avenue and West County 14th Street.
Upon firefighter’s arrival on scene, they found a gray sedan, facing north, in the westbound turn lane of County 14th with heavy front-end damage and all airbags deployed. To the west of this vehicle, also in the turn lane, was a farm service vehicle with minor damage to its rear driver’s side.
Another, 4 door, gray sedan with heavy damage to its front end and passenger side was on the shoulder at the northeast corner of the intersection.
According to a witness, the gray sedan that came to rest on the shoulder of the intersection, had been traveling eastbound on County 14th, when it failed to stop. The other gray sedan, with the right of way, was northbound on Somerton Avenue and struck the sedan that failed to stop.
This sedan then proceeded to strike the rear passenger side of the field service truck which was stopped on the eastside of the intersection at County 14th, the witness said. The vehicle that failed to stop veered northwest onto the shoulder.
The grey sedan that had failed to stop had three occupants, one of whom complained of leg pain. All three refused treatment and transportation.
The two occupants of the northbound grey sedan were injured and transported by two Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department ambulances to YRMC. The driver of the farm service truck stated he was uninjured.
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
