SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. – The homicide tally in this city rose to five this month as three people were slain over a two-day period.

All five slayings are under investigation by state police. No suspects had been taken into custody as of Monday.

A 28-year-old man identified by police only as Juan Carlos N. died Friday afternoon in a market at Avenida Libertad and Calle 45 after being shot, police said.

Police said residents of the neighborhood on the city’s southwest side heard gunshots and saw the man running to the market for refuge. The newspaper La Tribuna de San Luis quoted witnesses saying he was being pursued by at least three attackers who ultimately fled the scene.

Friday night, an unidentified man who had been fatally shot was found in a van parked outside a home at Escuadrón 201 and Jesús García streets, also on the southwest side of the city.

Saturday night, one man was killed and another injured in what was reported as a brawl.

The injured man, Estanislao

N., 30, had been struck in the head with a baseball bat, police said. He was rushed to a local hospital. Police in Mexico do not routinely release the surnames of crime victims or suspects who have yet to be prosecuted.
