Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County, Sonora and Baja California officials who gathered last week to work on plans for emergency responses during potential school-based outbreaks of illnesses. The event was especially timely given the coronavirus outbreak in China. We’re glad to see officials here working on plans and exercises in case of such a situation here!

• Thumbs up to the planned upgrades at the U.S. Port of Entry at San Luis, Ariz.! Officials at the port said the idea is to enhance security, efficiency while modernizing the facility — a great move for anyone who uses the port!

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County Farm Bureau, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year! The first meeting was held on Jan. 8, 1920. Congrats to the Yuma County Farm Bureau!

• Thumbs up to Clint Harrington, who was named the Business Person of the Year at the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce dinner recently! And thumbs up to Shelley Jones Mellon, who received the Athena Award, Jack Puckett and Yuma Insurance (Chamber Member of the Year), Maria Doten (Chamber Ambassador of the Year), Gene Doten (Chamber Champion), and Stephanie Daniels (Instagrammie Award). Congrats to all the Chamber award nominees and recipients!

• Thumbs up to salsa. That might seem strange, but salsa is a wonderful food. It comes in so many varieties, there is almost always something for everyone. Spicy, mild, medium, green, red, chunky or smooth, salsa is an amazing, versatile creation!

• Thumbs down to whoever spray-painted graffiti on a Yuma church and its neighboring school. The 12 symbols are pure vandalism and demoralizing to the community. If you have any tips on this case, contact the Yuma Police Department at 928-373-4700, or 928-7824763 to remain anonymous.

• Thumbs down to the new logo for the U.S. Space Force. It’s uncanny how similar the logo looks to the Star Trek Starfleet Command logo.

• Thumbs down to the rash of misinformation out there on the coronavirus. Rather than taking all these social media reports as fact, turn to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website to find accurate information — www.cdc.gov.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
