Early-morning fire destroys mobile home; occupants unhurt, displaced
The occupants of a single-wide mobile home were able to evacuate their residence safely Friday morning after someone noticed that it was on fire.
“They were awakened from their sleep by someone banging on their door and the side of their home,” said Rural/Metro Fire Chief Tim Soule.
Soule said that at approximately 4:30 a.m. the Rural/Metro Communications Center received a report of a structure on fire in the vicinity of the 900 block of South Date Avenue and dispatched firefighters to the location.
Once on scene firefighters found a residence in a trailer park engulfed in fire. The occupants had already evacuated on their own.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, which prevented it from spreading to nearby trees, vehicles and other residences. However, one home and one car did sustain some slight damage.
The remaining fire units responding were canceled en route. Rural/Metro initially responded to the call with four engines, two tenders, two chief officers and a medical unit.
The Red Cross was called to provide assistance to the residents, who were displaced following the loss of their home. There were no reports of any injuries.
Soule added that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Rural/Metro reminds the community to always ensure homes have working smoke detectors and to practice fire exit drills for all residents, especially children.
