Hearing in murder case continued until next month

- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

The hearing for the man charged in connection to a fatal shooting in July was continued in Yuma County Superior Court on Thursday.

When asked to provide the court with an update on the status of the case, attorney Jerry Hernandez requested a two-week continuance, explaining that while his client Jimmie Roy Jordan has undergone a mental competency evaluation, he has not yet received a report on the results.

Hernandez further explained that his client was only examined last week and did not know how long it would actually take to get the results back.

Saying he thought it would probably take longer than two weeks, Superior Court Judge Roger Nelson granted Hernandez’s request, giving him until late February.

Jordan has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, misconduct involving weapons and two counts of aggravated assault in the murder of 31-year-old Marcus Jackson.

His next court appearance is now set for 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 27.

Jackson, died from his wounds at a Phoenix-area hospital. He had been shot three times, once in the shoulder, once in the chest and once in the head.

According to Yuma police, Jordan was initially sought as a suspect in an attempted homicide July 19 in the 2100 block of South 5th Avenue.

Officers responded to the location at 4:43 a.m. in reference to a man down call. Upon their arrival on scene, officers located Jackson with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Phoenix area hospital with lifethreatening injuries.

Police said Jackson was eventually declared “brain dead” and placed on life support. Jordan was located July 23 in the 1800 block of South Walnut and was taken into custody without incident.

Last year Jordan, who eventually turned himself in, had also been sought by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office for questioning in connection to a triple murder that happened on Sept. 3, 2018, at a home in the 2700 block of West 5th Street.

Though he was never indicted in relation to the murders, he was, however, charged with a number of drug offenses after a search warrant was carried out on his residence. That case was dropped at the beginning of this year.

Jordan is currently being held on $1 million bond at the Yuma County Detention Center.
