- FROM STAFF REPORTS

SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. – A police officer was hospitalized after being wounded in an exchange of gunfire that claimed the life of the man who allegedly fired on police.

The municipal police officer said the police officers came under fire about 7 p.m. Saturday while on routine patrol in the 10 de Abril neighborhood on the city’s northeast corner.

Police said the officers returned fire, killing the gunman, identified only as Jesus N., 21 years old. Police in Mexico do not fully identify criminal suspects pending conviction or victims of crime.

Police did not provide any motives for the man shooting at police.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, where his condition was not immediately known.

In an unrelated case on Sunday, police found the body of a fatally shot man at an abandoned construction site on the city’s east side, just north of the highway to Sonoyta, Son.

Police said the man had wounds to the back and that several spent cartridge casings were found at the scene. The unidentified victim was 55 years old, had curly gray hair and a beard, and wore a blue Tshirt, denim pants and work boots, police said.

The slaying is under investigation by state police.

The weekend incidents came on the heels of six homicides reported in San Luis Rio Colorado for the month of January.

Authorities attribute much of the bloodshed to fighting among drug trafficking organizations and street gangs. Semaforo Delictivo, an independent website that tracks crime statistics around Mexico, reported there were 98 homicides in San Luis Rio Colorado in 2019.
