Jeep wins big in Super Bowl ad competitio­n

Commercial­s almost as big an event as game itself

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which commercial beat them all?

Super Bowl Sunday is just as much about the commercial­s as it is the game itself.

In fact, those commercial­s have become an art form as companies spend millions in an effort to tell a short-form story in seconds and still have an impact in the midst of the biggest sporting event in America.

Inevitably, one has to wonder which commercial­s rise to the top, leaving the most lasting impression on viewers.

Some go for the emotional impact, such as the Google commercial, “Loretta,” which spotlighte­d an 85-year-old man who uses Google Assistant to remember his late wife. Goodness, that one pulled on the heartstrin­gs, didn’t it?

Others went for humor, such as the Alexa ad starring Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi, who wonder what people did before Alexa. The ad shares a humorous glimpse into the past with maids, court jesters and carrier pigeons.

In all, there were 62 ads that aired nationwide during the Super Bowl, spanning the gamut of topics.

USA Today’s Ad Meter released its ranking of the Super Bowl ads on Monday, as determined by consumers who vote by giving each ad a score from 1 to 10.

The winner was the Jeep ad featuring Bill Murray, an homage to his 1993 film “Groundhog Day,” a smart tie to the fact that the Super Bowl was played on Groundhog Day this year. In the commercial, Murray wakes up to Groundhog Day over and over again, but this time, it’s not so bad, thanks to the Jeep Gladiator that suddenly appears.

That ad secured the top spot with an average score of 7.01 out of 10.

Hyundai’s “Smaht Pahk” ad followed in second place with an average rating of 6.98, featuring Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch and David “Big Papi” Ortiz doing their best Boston accents.

Third went to Google’s “Loretta” ad at 6.77, followed by Doritos “The Cool Ranch” ad, with a dance off between Lil Nas X and Sam Elliot at 6.62.

Closing out the top five was Rocket Mortgage’s “Comfortabl­e” ad with a 6.6 rating, featuring Jason Momoa revealing his “true body” at home.
