Business Glance
Yuma Regional Medical Center has welcomed a new class of family and community medicine residents to Yuma. As recent medical school graduates, the eight medical residents will spend the next three years in rotations alongside medical specialists in areas including pediatrics, cardiology, emergency medicine, kidney care, women’s health and gastroenterology. Additionally, they will receive training and mentorship as they treat patients at the YRMC Family Medicine Center over the next three years.
Members of the Class of 2024 are Dr. Sana Aman,
Dr. Zainab Amin, Dr. Reina Ayala, Dr. Ludny Charles, Dr. Cullen Copeland, Dr. Pamela Cuebas, Dr. Nicole Daniel and Dr. Veerauo Konkankit.
“Not only is a medical residency beneficial for these recently graduated physicians, but it benefits our Yuma community in so many different ways, like increasing access to medical care,” said
Dr. Kristina Diaz, chief academic officer and program director. “This is a win for both our patients and our new family and community medicine residents.”
Since its inception in 2013, YRMC’s residency program has rapidly gained a reputation as an excellent training ground for primary care physicians. Over the past eight years, these Yuma-based medical residents have made a significant impact on patient care. The program has drastically increased the number of patients seen each year at the YRMC Family Medicine Center. In 2016, the clinic saw 19,745 patient visits compared to 33,284 in 2020.
Moreover, by increasing the number of physicians in the clinic, new patients can now get an appointment in less than half the number of days it used to take.
Thirty-five physicians have completed the residency since 2013. More than 40% of graduates have chosen to stay in
Yuma to practice. In addition, all six classes of graduates have maintained a 100% pass rate on the American Board of Family Medicine Certification
Exam.
The program is making other valuable contributions within the Yuma community.
The doctors volunteer 1,000-plus hours each year, donating their time at health fairs, outreach clinics, educational seminars and youth development workshops. In 2019, the Family and Community Medicine Residency teamed up with YRMC’s Volunteer Services department to create the Mentor Me M.D. program. Mentor Me M.D. has helped guide four Yuma community youth to college. Three participants received fullride scholarships to major universities, and one was Ivy League.
Over the next three years, the incoming class of 2024 will contribute to these initiatives, programs and the community as they receive the training they need to become exceptional family medicine doctors. The eight residents were selected from a group of nearly 2,000 medical graduate applicants.
“This class of residents – our ninth – is an outstanding group of physicians,” Diaz said. “Please join me in welcoming them to this community and our hospital.”
