Softball drops three games on first day of Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout

The Arizona Western Lady Matadors (0-8) lost three games on the first day of the Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout on Thursday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.

GAME ONE

Arizona Western dropped the opener of the Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout, 7-5 to Utah State Eastern.

The Lady Matadors jumped out to an early lead, taking a 1-0 advantage on a Tinley Schmidgall single to left. Utah State Eastern went on to score three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.

Abigail Ibarra pulled the Lady Matadors to within four runs at 7-3 with a tworun home run in the fourth inning and added two more runs to cut the deficit to 7-5 in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and an Ariana

Montiel single.

Summer Simpson threw three scoreless innings of relief while Tinley Schmidgall and Valerie Joaquin each picked up two hits in the loss.

GAME TWO

The Lady Matadors were shutout in game two, being held to just two hits in the loss. Snow opened the scoring with a run in the first inning before adding three in the third inning and two in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Snow added their seventh run on a home run and then scored the winning run on a single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jessie Garcia and Joaquin accounted for the only two hits for the Lady Matadors.

GAME THREE

The Lady Matadors were held to just one hit in an 8-0 loss Southern Nevada in the third game of the day. Southern Nevada scored three runs in each of the second and fourth innings while adding two more in the fifth inning.

Joaquin picked up the lone hit for the Lady Matadors and drew a walk while Kimberly Valenzuela and Annette Juarez each walked in the loss.

The Lady Matadors are back in action on day two of the Chapman Automotive Great Western Shootout on Friday, February 3, for a rematch with Snow at 3:00 pm at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for seniors and youth.
