At the age of 17, John enlisted in the USMC. He valued his service highly and attended the rank of Gunnery SGT. John did 2 tours in Vietnam and 1 tour in Okinawa. During his service John received 5 times good conduct medals, Natl Defense Med, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. In 1967, he completed Explosive Ordinance Disposable Training and Chemical and Biological Explosive Ordinance Disposal Training. After retiring from the Marine Corps, John worked as a civil service employee for the Yuma Proving Ground for 20 years as contractual work in weapons testing.
John enjoyed participating in gourd dancing at powwows all over the country, winning multiple contest awards. He was a member of the Kiowa Gourd Clan and the Black Legging Society. John was a member of the Kiowa Tribe and was of Wichita descent. John met and married Edith Marie Rusaw, in 1961 and she was also a Marine and from this Union they had 4 sons.
John is survived by his: Sons: Michael Lorentz, Centennial, WY; Ronnie Lorentz, Greeley CO; Scott Lorentz, Greeley CO. Granddaughters: Toni Lorentz, Booneville, NY; Andrea Lorentz Santoyo, San Diego, CA; Stevie Lorentz Legrande, Greeley, CO; Rikki Lorentz, Yuma, AZ. Great Grandchildren; Gabriella Lorentz, Dakota “Bam-bam” Lorentz, NY; James Lorentz, Yuma, AZ; Evie Lorentz, Yuma, AZ. Sisters: Vickey Lorentz, Anadarko, OK; Sheila Lorentz, Anadarko, OK; Lori Lorentz Komalty, Anadarko, OK; Aunt: Roberta Strange, TX; Special Cousin: Gladys Walker. He also had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his: son, John Lorentz, Jr; parents, Arthur and Ceclia Lorentz; maternal grandparents, John and Ailene Queton; paternal grandparents, John and Lena Lorentz; brother, Arthur Lorentz, Jr; Al Lorentz; nieces, Lena Lorentz, Vickey Lorentz; nephews, Philip (Bear) Komalty; Zachany Lorentz. Funeral Service was: 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Rainy Mountain Indian Baptist Church, Mountain View, OK. Interment was: Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Rainy Mountain Cemetery, Mountain View, OK. Under the direction of Ray and Martha's Funeral Home, Anadarko, OK.
