Costs add up fast on Super Bowl Sunday
Spending on food, drinks, etc, expected to hit $17.3b this year
It’s almost here, readers. Super Bowl Sunday is less than 24 hours away, where the San Francisco 49ers face the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas.
And wow, it is an expensive one!
On Wednesday afternoon, Sportingnews.com reported the average seat cost $10,026, with a range on Stubhub from $6,300 to over $44,000.
Granted, these are last-minute prices, but still … wow.
Sportingnews notes that the stadium is one of the smallest in the league, at just 65,000 seats, so prices could continue to climb.
And it’s not just going to the Super Bowl that’s expensive this year.
Consumer spending linked to the game is forecast to hit an alltime high. The National Retail Federation reports that more than 200 million U.S. adults plan to tune in, and more than half of those plan to either host or attend a watch party. Another 16 million plan to watch from a bar or restaurant.
The NRF notes that spending on food, drinks, apparel, party decorations, etc. is expected to hit $17.3 billion – roughly $86 per person – up about $1 billion from 2023.
That’s a lot of spending for an afternoon of football at home!
The NRF also asked people what was most important to them during the Super Bowl.
The game itself was most important to 44% of viewers, while 19% said it was the halftime show, and those famous Super Bowl commercials? They are most important to 18% of viewers – frankly, we thought the commercials would be a little higher, given all the hype leading up to them!
No matter how we look at this, Super Bowl Sunday has the potential to be an expensive day.
But here’s a random fun fact. In 1967, Sportingnews notes a Super Bowl ticket cost just $12 – which, when adjusted for inflation, was still only $112.
What we wouldn’t give to score a Super Bowl ticket today for those prices!
