Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma for another fabulous air show! It takes a lot of work, effort and coordination to pull that event off, but it’s always amazing to see the aircraft up close and personal. It gives everyone an inside look at the base – and we love that!

• Thumbs up to the state of Arizona for not doing that whole “spring forward” and “fall back” deal with the clocks each year. The change back and forth to daylight saving time is tough, and we’re glad we don’t have to do it here!

• Thumbs up for Regional Center for Border Health, which recently announced plans to build the first hospital in southern Yuma County. The project is expected to be in operation in San Luis, Ariz., by the spring of 2026. It’s great news for south county residents!

• Thumbs up to Yuma Regional Medical Center for the new memorial honoring those who lost their lives to COVID-19. It’s a lovely tribute, with over 800 stars to represent the number of people who lost their lives here to the illness.

• Thumbs up to Yuma County and the Somerton City Council, which are partnering together to bring safety improvements to Avenue D and County 15th Street. We are all for any projects that boost safety – and this intersection is in need of some attention.

• Thumbs down to windy days. Actually, we don’t mind the wind all that much – it brings a little cooldown, which we appreciate. It’s the blowing dust, dirt and sand that really gets under our skin …

• Thumbs down to people who bring their dogs to public events and then fail to clean up after said dogs when nature calls. We can’t really blame the dog for doing his business, but we can blame the owner for leaving it on the walkway in the midst of a busy event! Eww, people!

• Thumbs down to the “gorilla hail” that nailed parts of Kansas and Missouri this week. Reports of 3- and 4-inch hail were reported, which frankly is terrifying. The hail brought traffic to a stop on Interstate 70, the Associated Press reported. We hope we don’t ever see that here!
