Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to 2024 Kite Fest. There are few things better in this world than spending a breezy, sunny afternoon outside flying a kite … and, readers, we’ve certainly got both breezes and sunshine in Yuma. Kudos to the City of Yuma for a fun event!

• And speaking of amazing events, thumbs up to the organizers of Yuma’s annual Relay for Life. Yumans truly care for one another, and this event showcases that care in so many different, special ways. It was unfortunate that weather impacted the last few hours of Relay this year, but the message of love still came through 100%.

• Thumbs up to the One Book Yuma program for bringing such interesting, unique authors to Yuma County every year. This time around, it was Melissa L. Sevigny, author of “Brave the Wild River: The Untold Story of Two Women Who Mapped the Botany of The Grand Canyon.” It’s definitely one worth checking out.

• Thumbs up to the City of San Luis, Ariz., for moving forward on plans to rehabilitate the Joe Orduno Park swimming pool. Facilities such as this one are critically important to any community, but given our insane summer heat, pools are vital. We’re glad to see San Luis investing in theirs.

• Thumbs up to the updated signage at the Herb Guenther Scenic Overlook in the East Wetlands. It’s important to remember and honor our history – and these landmarks help us do just that.

• Thumbs up to the City of Yuma for its slurry seal, oil seal and chip seal project, which was expected to begin this week and last through the end of April. Noone wants to drive on choppy roads, and these efforts by the city go a long way toward preserving our existing roadways while at the same time making them a little safer. And that’s a win-win.

• Thumbs down to internet scammers. We’ve said this before, but we’ll say it again. These scam artists will go to great lengths to look like legitimate businesses that you know and trust. But in this day and age, approach any of this outreach with a heavy degree of caution and skepticism – especially if someone requests your credit card information or Social Security number.

• Thumbs down to this ongoing obsession over Princess Kate’s health. The royal family has always been shrouded in some level of secrecy, especially when it comes to medical issues, so we’re not sure why this is really surprising to anyone that such secrecy continues today. We don’t agree with it, but we also don’t agree with the wild speculation floating around out there, either.
