Takos & Beer was supposed to celebrate the soft opening of its new location last Thursday and the grand opening on Friday, however, a fire on Wednesday postponed the events.

Despite the setback, the Mexican restaurant has already rescheduled the grand opening to April 13. The new location is 2640 S. 4th Ave., site of the old Arby’s.

“We would like to thank you for all of your support as we face this week’s unexpected challenges,” Takos & Beer posted online.

On Wednesday, Chef Eddie Guzman thanked the community for its support in a Facebook message. “There was this fire. Thankfully, nobody got hurt. Our staff was in and some contractors were in, but everybody’s safe. Nothing major happened, but we won’t be able to do our soft opening tomorrow,” he said.

“We want to make sure that the building is safe to go back in,” he added.

In the meantime, Guzman noted, the restaurant will try to keep staff working. “To make sure that they don’t lose their hours,” the company will place a food truck in the parking lot.

According to David Finch, vice president of operations for the Guzman Hospitality Group, the building will house Takos & Beer and the other location at 2071 S. 4th Ave. will be converted into another concept.

The group is also working on a new project called Calle Ocho, which Finch noted is a vision of Chef Eddie’s to bring Cuban sandwiches to Yuma, using a food truck. But that is a vision for the near future, not quite today.

The Guzman Hospitality Group also operates The Hills Gastropub at the Desert Hills Golf Course, 1245 W. Desert Hills Drive, and Julieanna’s Seafood & Steakhouse, 1951 W. 25th St.

Did you catch the news of the “winding down” of 99 Cents Only Stores? The company on Thursday announced plans to commence an orderly wind-down of its business operations.

The company has already started to liquidate

all merchandise and dispose of certain fixtures, furnishings and equipment at its stores. Sales started on Friday and will be carried out at all 371 of the company’s store locations in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas.

Yuma has two stores, one in town at 1701 S.

4th Ave. and another in the Foothills at 11274 S. Fortuna Road.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” said Mike Simoncic, Interim Chief Executive Officer. “Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, including the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting consumer demand, rising levels of shrink, persistent inflationary pressures and other macroeconomic headwinds, all of which have greatly hindered the Company’s ability to operate. We deeply appreciate the dedicated employees, customers, partners and communities who have collectively supported 99 Cents Only Stores for decades.”
