It’s exciting to see an El Centro native made the cut this year!

-

The newest list of inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and as usual, it’s an eclectic list.

Here are the eight new inductees in the performer category:

• Mary J. Blige.

• Cher.

• Dave Matthews Band.

• Foreigner.

• Peter Frampton.

• Kool & The Gang.

• Ozzy Osbourne.

• A Tribe Called Quest.

Let’s take a look at these artists.

Mary J. Blige is often called the “queen of R&B, known for amazing songs like “Family Affair” and “Real Love.”

The Dave Matthews Band formed in 1991 and hit the radar in 1994 with the album Under the Table and Dreaming, which spawned hits like “What Would You Say?” and “Satellite.”

Foreigner, formed in 1976, had several chart-topping hits like “Juke Box Hero,” “Hot-blooded” and “Feels Like

the First Time.”

Peter Frampton got his start with the band Humble Pie before launching a solar career with hits like “Show Me the Way” and “Baby, I Love Your Way.”

Kool & The Gang brings a mix of R&B, soul and funk with hits like “Jungle Boogie,” “Ladies’ Night” and “Celebrate!”

Ozzy Osbourne began with Black Sabbath before his solo career with heavy metal hits including “Crazy Train,” “No More Tears,” “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” and “Close My Eyes Forever.”

A Tribe Called Quest formed in 1985, a hip-hop/ rap collective with a jazz twist. Their chart toppers include “Can I Kick It?” “Check the Rhime” and Jazz (We Got).”

But readers, we’re most excited to see Cher on this list. Cher’s songs span generations, with “Believe, “If I Could Turn Back Time,” and “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down.) She was well-known for her amazing music before taking on starring roles in films like Silkwood and Moonstruck. She’s a fashion icon who has never shied away from advocating for causes she feels passionate about.. But best of all? Cher was born in El Centro, Calif. – just down the road from Yuma.

Looking at the list on the surface, it might seem like a very usual grouping of musicians – not to mention musical styles.

But that’s the beauty of the American music scene. Every songwriter and musician out there is influenced by the music they’ve heard along the way. And that blending of styles throughout time weaves the diverse, outstanding tapestry that is American music.

“Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”
