Governor orders ags at halfsta today for Gary Knight

Procession to Civic Center will take place today after service on Main Street for the councilman

Gov. Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to halfstaff from sunrise to sunset today in honor and respect of Yuma City Councilman Gary Knight, who passed away on April 14.

A native of Yuma, Knight was a proud veteran and business owner and came out of retirement to serve the people of Yuma. He was elected to the Yuma City Council in 2013 and also served as Deputy Mayor from 2017-2019. He was on the Yuma Metropolit­an Planning Organizati­on Executive Board, Greater Yuma Port Authority Executive Board, represente­d the City on both the Chamber Transporta­tion and Chamber Legislativ­e Affairs Committees and was appointed by Governor Ducey to the State Transporta­tion Board.

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Councilman Gary Knight, who was an unwavering supporter and advocate of the people of Yuma. My thoughts are with his wife Bonnie, his kids and the entire Yuma community as they grieve. I have ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Friday, the day of interment, to honor his life of service,” Hobbs said in a statement.

Individual­s, businesses, and other organizati­ons are encouraged to join in this tribute.

The public is also invited to attend a Celebratio­n of Life for Councilmem­ber Knight at 11 a.m. today at the Historic Downtown Theater (254 S. Main St.) followed by a luncheon at the Yuma Civic Center (1440 W. Desert Hills Drive). There will be a procession of City vehicles to honor Knight from the downtown area to the Yuma Civic Center after the service.

The Yuma Police Department estimated the procession would depart the Historic Downtown Theater at approximat­ely noon.

The procession will begin in the 100-200 block of South Main Street and will proceed to 1st Street south on 4th Avenue and continue as follows:

• 4th Avenue south to 32nd Street, using the 4th Avenue Extension

• West on 32nd Street to Avenue A

• South on Avenue A to Desert Sun Drive (Entrance to Civic Center)

• End at the Yuma Civic Center main entrance to the building

Please expect delays and allow extra time for an alternate route. If you are traveling around the area, use caution and watch for emergency personnel.
