SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. – Construction will begin this month on the pipeline that will bring natural gas to this city, initially to supply the new power plant under construction.

This was announced by Mayor Santos González Yescas June 26 during a press conference, referring to the results of a meeting with representatives from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Grupo Carso, which will build and operate the Centauro del Norte gas pipeline, spanning 441 kilometers.

The investment in the project is estimated at $1.253 billion, and in its first phase, the pipeline will run 76 kilometers from eastern Mexicali to San Luis Río Colorado to feed two power plants that the CFE is constructing in the neighboring municipality and east of the city.

“It is a very important investment; with the construction of the thermoelectric plants and now with the gas, San Luis will definitely have a before and after because we have the natural resources,” said the mayor.

The agreement between CFE and Grupo Carso, a national business conglomerate, was signed in December for the development, construction, and operation of the pipeline.

The second phase of the project includes the section of the pipeline from San Luis R.C. to Caborca, spanning 365 kilometers.

The plan is to complete the first phase of the pipeline by May 2025, while the second phase will be constructed by June 2027.

Here, the pipeline will supply natural gas to the combined cycle power plant, which will use this input and steam to generate electricity.

The construction of the plant, which began in 2019, is in its final stages.

“This is the most important thing happening in our municipality; it is key for San Luis Río Colorado for what lies ahead,” emphasized González Yescas, referring to the power plant and the pipeline that will bring natural gas.

The project is expected to create around 700 direct jobs, with the possibility for Grupo Carso to supply natural gas to other customers.
