The adoption of a special resolution on Enlightenment and Religious Tolerance embodied the practical implementation of the initiative of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev put forward at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in September 2017 in New York.

In order to implement this initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, together with other government agencies of the country, has undertaken certain efforts to elaborate the text of the draft resolution and its coordination with all the United Nations member nations.

It is noteworthy that the resolution was not only unanimously supported by all UN member states, but was also co-authored by over 50 countries of the world.

The resolution emphasizes the important role of promoting education, peace, human rights, tolerance and friendship, and also recognizes the importance of integration, mutual respect, protection of human rights, tolerance and mutual understanding in the name of bolstering security and peace in the world.

The document welcomes all international, regional and national initiatives aimed at promoting interreligious, intercultural and interethnic harmony and combating discrimination against individuals based on religion or belief.

In addition, the resolution recognizes the key role of UNESCO in promoting peace and security in the world by expanding cooperation among nations through education, science and culture.

The unanimous adoption of this resolution by the UN General Assembly is a clear manifestation and indicator of complete support by the international community for the consistent, deeply thought-out strategy of the President of Uzbekistan to consolidate the atmosphere of cooperation, mutual respect and solidarity among different ethnicities and faiths, maintaining and boosting interfaith dialogue, ensuring intercultural and interethnic communication, securing peace and harmony in our country.

The initiative is seeks to secure universal access to education, eradicate illiteracy and ignorance. The document aims to “promote the establishment of tolerance and mutual respect, ensure religious freedom, protection of the rights of believers, and prevent their discrimination.”
