Vietnam plans to have 28 airports by 2030 and the number would increase to 31 by 2050.

According to the revised master plan for airport development for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050 which the Ministry of Transport has just submitted to the Prime Minister, in the period 2021-2030, 22 existing airports will be upgraded and six new airports will be built, including the Long Thanh, Na San, Lai Chau, Sapa, Quang Tri and Phan Thiet. By 2030, the country will have 28 airports, including 14 international airports and 14 domestic airports, which can serve 283 million passengers and handle 4.1 million tons of cargo. The investment needed is estimated at over VND400 trillion (US$17.4 billion).

By 2050, there will be 31 airports across the country, including 14 international airports (Van Don, Haiphong, Noi Bai, Tho Xuan, Vinh, Phu Bai, Danang, Chu Lai, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong, Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho and Phu Quoc) and 17 domestic airports (Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Sa Pa, Cao Bang, Na San, Cat Bi, Dong Hoi, Quang Tri, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot, Phan Thiet, Rach Gia, Ca Mau, Con Dao and the second airport southeast of Hanoi). The country will have two international air transport hubs of regional stature in Hanoi and HCMC.

There are currently 22 airports in Vietnam, including nine international airports and 13 domestic airports, operated by the State-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

Many big private businesses, such as Vietjet, IPP, Vingroup, FLC and T&T, are keen on the airport development.
