EXHIBITION “OF WATER AND GREENERY”
January 10 - February 29, 2020
Based on the archives of the Colonial Exhibitions that took place from 1906 to 1931 in France, visual artist Le Giang “dissected” the perceptions of Vietnam in the colonial era as constructed within French popular culture, in order to make new artistic creations. The artist looked for images of Indochina, to which she applied a treatment that blurred out the details, to better understand how discourses and narratives shaped colonial nostalgia.
Le Giang’s “Of Water and Greenery” hopes to identify the painful obstacles on the way to coming to a compromise with conflicting memories, and confronts the myths about Indochina in the context of contemporary Vietnam.
