HOW TO PREPARE FOR EXPLORING
WHEN YOU HEAR ABOUT SON DOONG AS WELL AS THE GRANDEUR OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST CAVE, YOU BEGIN TO DREAM ABOUT YOUR TRIP TO THAT DREAMY PLACE. AND WHEN THAT DREAM COMES TRUE, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO PREPARE TO HAVE A PERFECT JOURNEY TO DISCOVER SON DOONG? PLEASE
Regular exercise before you go will be useful for you before exploring Son Doong cave, because you will experience a series of different activities during the journey: walking through forest and stream (about nearly 30 km on foot) - climbing the slope - climbing ropes (the Great Wall of Vietnam) - swimming (although it is not necessary to know how to swim because there will be support equipment). Therefore, endurance will be needed to make it through the activities above. It is important exercise regularly or maintain your usual activity (cycling, jogging or playing badminton or tennis will give you some serious benefits). Especially about one month before starting the journey, you must practice more regularly and more diligently.
KNOWLEDGE OF CAVES
Gaining knowledge of the caves in advance will make your journey into Son Doong more interesting. Look for scientific information or watch documentaries on trusted channels (like National Geographic) to add information to your luggage before your trip. During the trip, take advantage of the opportunity to discuss more with the experts or the tour guide to make your trip more interesting.
WALKING SHOES
Will one suitable pair of shoes protect your feet during the journey? No, there are no such shoes. Because of the diverse terrain and many different activities such as jungle trekking, hiking, climbing, swimming, swinging, etc. suitable shoes will often be the type of trek shoes with soft soles from toe to heel (not too hard like hiking shoes, it should be softer because the shoes will tackle different terrains). The shoes should also have a toe with a protective layer to avoid hitting on hard rock and anti-slip spikes and lightweight shoelaces. Salomon’s shoes, such as trail running shoes or amphibious shoes, are my favorite models. You should choose the type that covers the ankle. You also need to get used to your shoes so it’s best to buy shoes and wear them for 1-2 months before departure.
In addition, you should also choose the type of
socks that fit your feet to prevent the sand or gravel from getting in and to prevent blisters. You will have three nights to sleep in the cave, so each day you need a pair of socks. Thin and long socks to keep you warm at night are also helpful. In addition, to protect your feet from itching (thanks to the jungle streams), you should bring baby powder or anti-itch cream.
In my experience, you should wash your feet clean and soak them in salt water (made of sea salt) after going to Son Doong to avoid the phenomenon of “foot-water”. And you need to bring a pair of sports shoes to wear at the camping site overnight for convenience, otherwise you will have to go barefoot or wear the special shoes borrowed from the porters!
ITEMS TO HELP YOU AVOID THE SUN
Son Doong tour is held from January to August. In the summer, from the end of April to the end of July, the weather in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park area is quite hot during the day, so tourists need to cover themselves carefully. Caps with veils and nape (which can be transform to normal cap when necessary) will be helpful when walking through the jungle, especially the first day going to En cave - the overnight campsite - and the last day and the road after conquering the Great Wall of Vietnam to the shuttle. On hot
FOOD
days, a thin, absorbent towel wrapped around the back of the neck can also help reduce heat and encourage cooling.
What should you eat when going to Son Doong? Of course, the tour cooks will make delicious, fresh food from local ingredients for tourists in the daily meals. However, in order not to be “undernourished” or if you need to recharge energy during the daily tour, tourists should bring snacks such as energy bars or energy gel packages. These need to be purchased/ prepared in advance (which can be done in specialized sport stores or some supermarkets in big cities like Saigon and Hanoi), because they are not yet available in Phong Nha.
AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The environmental protection and cave conservation activities were propagated before the trip and were thoroughly implemented during the trip under the supervision of experts, guides and porters. Therefore, your preparation should consider this issue. For example, the choice of environmentally friendly toothpaste or shampoo also contributes to the protection of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna in Son Doong.
Hopefully, with this information, you will have a sweet dream in Son Doong!
