SEA Games Highlights
►Kurash
Vietnamese fighter Nguyễn Thị Thanh Trâm won gold in the women’s 70kg category, beating Kyaw of Myanmar in the final match at the Hoài Đức Gymnasium in Hà Nội.
Her gold was Việt Nam’s seventh title in the sport, helping the hosts to dominate top the kurash medal tally. Prior to the Games, the team had targeted five gold medals.
►Golf
Thai golfer Weerawish Narkprachar leads the first round of the men’s singles at the Heron Lake Golf Course & Resort in Vĩnh Phúc Province.
Weerawish took the lead with 4 under par. Hiroshi Hirahara Tai of Singapore came second (-3), and Pongsapak Laopakdee of Thailand and Indonesian Amadeus Christian Susanto were joint third (-2).
►Table tennis
Thailand’s men’s team defeated the Cambodian team 3-0, while the Singapore men’s team beat the Philippines team 3-1 at the Hải Dương Gymnasium in Hải Dương City yesterday.
In the women's event, the Singapore team obtained a 3-0 win over Cambodia, and the Thailand women beat the Philippines 3-0.
►Volleyball
The Philippines cruised to a 3-0 win (2514, 25-20, 25-15) over Malaysia in the women’s volleyball curtain-raiser at Đại Yên Sports Centre of Quảng Ninh Province.
It was a surprise as the Philippines team had a poor result at the Games on their home turf in 2019, while Malaysia sent a young squad with almost all players born after 2000.
►Pencak silat
Việt Nam beat the Philippines and Indonesia in the men’s 55-60kg weight category quarter-final but suffered a loss to Singapore.
The Malaysia team had a good start day beating Laos, Thailand and the Philippines at the North Từ Liêm sporting centre in Hà Nội on May 13.
Indonesia had two wins over Singapore and the Philippines, while Thailand tasted only one win over Singapore.
►Indoor handball
The Philippines trounced Malaysia 3-0 at the opening match of the ongoing SEA Games indoor handball competition in Quảng Ninh Province’s Hạ Long City.
Philippine athletes overwhelmed their Malaysian rivals and won all three rounds of the match.
The SEA Games 31 handball events last until May 22, with the participation of five female and seven male teams.
►Tennis
Việt Nam beat Cambodia 3-0 in the semi-finals of the women’s tennis team category at the Hanaka Paris Ocean Park tennis court complex in Bắc Ninh Province.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese men’s team lost 2-1 against Indonesia to relinquish their opportunity to earn a medal in the men's team event. Indonesia booked a ticket to the semi-finals.
